"We knew, through the universe, what so many young people, with all the national differences, resembled us. Some of them had suffered from war in children, others from revolutions in their country, all from the crisis. They knew what their nation was, their past, they wanted to believe in its future.
They did not believe in the promises of liberalism, the equality of men, the (so-called)will of the people. But they believed that a nation is one, from the independent researcher to the chief of industry, the poet, the scientist, or the maneuver.
They did not believe in "righteousness" that reigned by force. And they knew that from this force could be born joy. For the extravagance of the opponents of fascism lies above all in this total ignorance of the fascist joy. Joy that one can criticize, joy that one can even declare infernal, if it sings to you, but joy."
