The "most favored nation" clause - known in the United States as the "normal permanent business relationship" - is the cornerstone of international free trade and refers to a principle of reciprocity and non-discrimination that currently governs most commercial relations between the states.
Thus, the World Trade Organization (WTO) requires that any trade advantage - such as reduced tariffs - granted by one member be automatically applied to all others.
Depriving Putin's Russia of that status will allow its trading partners to impose higher tariffs on it, in order to penalize Russian exports.
This new sanction is in addition to several packages of measures aimed at gradually severing Putin's Russia's economic and financial ties with the rest of the world.
