(A soldier from the oldest running Navy in the world, the Portuguese War Navy.)
"The Portuguese Navy’s first recorded naval battle was fought around the 15th of July in 1180, when 9 Portuguese galleys fought against 10 Moorish ones near Cabo Espichel. At the time, ships weren’t equipped with naval guns and battle tactics consisted mainly in boarding the enemy ships and killing the crew. Having lost most of their men on a land battle the previous days, the Moorish ships were easy prey for the Portuguese."
