"There are many advantages of living in a community whose members have the same fundamental values and ideals. In such communities, the moral judgments of everyone are reinforced by the ideals and behavior of others, and all proceed confidently to transmit their values, ideals, and beliefs to their children. On the other hand, when communities are composed of different ethnic groups, the diversity of ideals and customs tend to produce doubt and confusion, and to corrode the moral convictions of all. The hostility frequently encountered when different ethnic groups live in the same community is a defensive reaction against the corroding influence of a foreign set of values and ideals."
